Michael Moore and the Practice of Documentary

Jamie Lowe

My study of documentary in my factual film and television module introduced me to Michael Moore. I wrote an essay in response to the way he constructs his arguments via autobiographical frameworks.

A common critique of Moore is that his representation of self serves to show him as a working class ‘everyman’ which obviously he isn’t, having made a healthy dollar or two off his films. My essay explored his uses of documentary modes and addressed the argument that his representation of self is contradicted by his success.

I have noted, especially from watching his films in chronological order, that his sense of self charts his rise to success in order to combat the notions that he pretends not to be successful in order to sell his films to liberal supporters of the left.

Danny From North Korea | Documentary by Liberty in North Korea

This is a fascinating documentary that I would suggest to literally everyone. Many of us think about North Korea and only see a tiny country that has “big talk” or sees North Korea as a scary country with, potentially, fatal power. However true or untrue those opinions may be, we often forget about the people that are trapped inside. This is an insightful documentary and only takes up a little over 30 minutes of your time. Please watch and stay informed.

Happy birthday, Mae West!

Shall we dance

Mae WestKnown for always being ahead of the curve, Mary Jane West was a vaudeville performer, comedienne and Hollywood actress born on August 17 of 1893. She wrote risky plays dealing with sexual themes and social taboos, an endeavor which gained her numerous encounters with the law.

Her debut in films arrived with Paramount Pictures’ Night after night, and afterwards she adapted many of her controversially foxy stage roles to the screen, always under the restrictive scrutiny of the censors.

Still, West managed to create memorably transgressive female characters, whilst maintaining her cheeky humor and unique charm.

She passed away on November 22 of 1980, after working in television, Broadway and even radio.
