girl-rising-slideToday is International Women’s Day to highlight women’s issues around the world and support women’s advancement and equality and here are some very depressing statistics from this article I read today:

  • Globally, one in four women are forced into their first sexual experience.
  • One in three women has been sexually abused by a member of their own household.
  • 60% of the hours worked in the world are worked by women who, in return, receive 10% of the world’s wages.
  • 50% of the world’s food is directly produced by women, who own a mere 1% of the land it’s produced on.
  • 66% of the world’s illiterate people are women – a proportion that hasn’t changed in a generation
  • 60,000,000 young girls worldwide are forced into marriage before their eighteenth birthdays
  • 358,000 women die every year in childbirth or because of poor pre- and post-natal care
  • Up to 3,000,000 little girls every…
